The Universal Law of Attraction
Of the twelve universal laws, the fourth law, the law of attraction, is one of the more widely known laws. In fact, many people readily recognize the acronym LOA, which stands for…
You guessed it: Law of Attraction!
Many authors from the early 20th century until now have written about the law and the powerful impact it has had on countless lives. Some books include:
- Practical Law of Attraction: Align Yourself with the Manifesting Conditions and Successfully Attract Your Desires, by Victoria M. Gallagher, first published in 2019.
- The Law of Attraction: The Basics of the Teachings of Abraham, by Esther and Jerry Hicks, first published in 2006.
- The Secret, by Rhonda Byrne, first published in 2006.
- You Can Heal Your Life, by Louise Hay, first published in 1984.
- The Power of Positive Thinking, by Norman Vincent Peale, first published in 1952.
- Think and Grow Rich, by Napoleon Hill, first published in 1937.
- The Master Key System, by Charles Haanel, first published in 1912.
And Thoughts are Things, first published in 1908 and written by Prentice Mulford, who is one of the first modern-day authors to write about the law of attraction.
Let us fly back a few more years, to 1888. Many credit Madame Helena Blavatsky as being the first person to coin the term “law of attraction” in her written work, The Secret Doctrine.
Traveling even further back…
Many attribute the New Thought Movement to Phineas Quimby, an inventor who, through his work, realized that some pain can be masked through excitement. In other words, through the quality of our thoughts, people have the power to control the amount of pain felt during an illness. More simply put, Quimby determined that “illness is a matter of the mind.”
Phineas Quimby didn’t use the term “Law of Attraction” nor did he refer to the universal law, but his understanding of the power of the mind is unmistakable. He recognized that an individual’s mind has the power to attract good or bad (in his writings, pain or less pain). This understanding is the very core of the fourth universal law, the law of attraction.
And still further back…
Evidence of the knowledge of the power of the mind exists in the bible and in Buddhist teachings. While neither specifically used the words, law of attraction, both do point to the understanding that the mind is a powerful tool that can create our reality.
- Proverbs 23:7—“For as he thinks in his heart, so is he…”
- Mark 11:24—“Whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”
- Over 2500 years ago, Buddha said, “All that we are is a result of what we have thought. The mind is everything, what we think, is what we become.”
The Universal Law of Attraction Explained
The foundation of the universal law of attraction, is that our thoughts are the vehicle that drives anything into our lives. The universe follows the energy of our thoughts and brings us good things when we have positive thoughts. Equally, if we have bad thoughts, thoughts that keep us anxious, fearful, angry, confused etc., bad things will come to us. Our thoughts drive what shows up in our life. This is the premise behind the law of attraction. To further expand on the universal law of attraction, through our mind (our thoughts both conscious and subconscious) we have the power to create our reality. All we need to do is think it, feel it, and believe it and we will attract what we want to our lives.
Word of Caution…
Thinking about something you would like to be or have, believing you are or have that something, and feeling that you are or have the thing you thought about are only a part of what truly makes up your reality. Many writings on the law of attraction can unwittingly lure people into believing that if they think something, believe that it is true, and feel within them that it is true…then it will become true. This is a simplistic understanding of how the fourth universal law actually works within our lives. It is overly simplified because:
- It implies that the law works independently of anything else. Meaning, it does not consider that this law works harmoniously with all the other universal laws.
- It negates the fact that bad things happen in our lives. We cannot escape some challenges and difficulties, no matter how positive we may think.
Remember, the universal law of attraction does work. But not alone. Each of the twelve universal laws, harmonize with one another (refer to previous posts on the universal laws). Once you understand how to use the laws to your favor, you will fill your life with more beauty, peace, love, and goodness—despite some challenges you may face.
Being mindful of your thoughts is important. It is also important to recognize that some obstacles and challenges that come to us, whether it’s a sickness, dealing with abuse, losing a loved one, or having an accident, may not be avoided. Life is meant to be lived with both good and bad. Obstacles and challenges are necessary for our soul to expand and deepen our connection with each other. Enduring difficulties in your life does not rule out your ability to attract what you may want. Because your thoughts and perceptions are powerful tools that can bring peace to chaos, they can calm to the storm.
“You are the master of your destiny. You can influence, direct, and control your environment. You can make your life what you want it to be.” Napoleon Hill (author of Think and Grow Rich)
In Closing:
Your mind is incredibly powerful. You are incredibly powerful. Through your thoughts, you have the unmistakable ability to create your reality. Think about something you want, believe you have that, feel in your bones that it’s yours. But also remember that this alone does not drive the success of the law of attraction. The law of attraction works energetically along with the other laws of the universe.
Your ability to adapt, to be resilient, and to find ways to continue despite the odds against you, is one of the secrets to the success of the law of attraction. Keeping your thoughts more attuned with higher vibrational frequencies to create a better vision of your reality is another secret to the success of the law of attraction. Planning and taking purposeful steps also play a role in the success of the law of attraction.
Finally, remember to:
- Avoid thinking too much about what you don’t like or wishing things were different.
- Think more about what you do like, what you would keep doing the same,
- Give gratitude for something, this creates space for more abundance, more good things to show up in your life.
Once you tip the scales more in your favor, rather than against you, you will unmistakably attract more good things to you.
